How to do a kidney cleanse to boost your health?  Let’s start by discussing why you want to do a kidney cleanse in the first place?  You have probably heard of liver cleansing but what about kidney cleansing?

Your kidneys are 2 small organs that sit on either side of your spine. They are shaped like beans and are responsible for filtering out toxins and waste from your bloodstream that doesn’t belong in your body.  These toxins then pass through your urine out the body.  Your kidneys are responsible for fluid balance and keeping salt, potassium and acid content at a stable level. Pretty important, right?

They are very hard working organs and filter approximately 200 quarts of blood per day. They are working fastidiously whether you know it or not.  What happens when this doesn’t work well?

Some of the symptoms you may suffer when your kidneys are not working well are headaches, stomach ache, feeling nauseous, water retention, bloated and exhaustion.  You may suffer kidney stones or kidney disease. Kidney disease is often not discovered until it is advanced in nature.

Your kidneys also regulate certain hormones that affect your health. Your kidneys make the hormone that stimulates red blood cell production, controls blood pressure and calcium metabolism.  When calcium metabolism is not working correctly, you get kidney stones.

So why do a kidney cleanse?

To improve the function of your kidneys and improve all the processes associated with your kidneys.  Like other cleanses, this is something that you can do seasonally, say twice a year unless you have kidney health issues already and you want to do this cleanse more regularly. If you have kidney stones, this cleanse will be very helpful.

This kidney cleanse is over a 3 day period in which you are going to only eat very small meals and mostly liquids.  It is comprised on herbs, vegetables, certain fruits and very little protein.  Of course, you must always discuss a kidney cleanse with your medical doctor before proceeding.

Find a 3 day period in your schedule that doesn’t require you working hard.  You want to stay home and relax.

What to expect during the kidney cleanse

You may experience headaches, be tired and feel like you have the flu. This is perfectly normal and are symptoms associated with detoxing. You may feel a little nauseous, thirsty and exhaustion.  Answer your body’s cries for help.  Sleep, rest, don’t watch TV or do anything stimulating.  Go for a walk, meditation, take an infra red sauna if you can and generally switch off from all your responsibilities for 3 days.  I hear you say that you can’t do this – well that’s an excuse. Everyone can and should be taking time out for themselves periodically. Your bladder will need emptying more frequently during the cleanse.

Water consumption during the kidney cleanse

You will drink water as per normal recommended amounts- 1/2 your body weight in ounces of clean water.  You may choose to use distilled water during the cleanse.  This helps to move the toxins out of your body. You may pass stones during the cleanse and if you do this is very helpful.  It is removing all the debris like you would expect to see in your liver cleanse.

We recommend that you add lemon juice to all your water during your cleanse.  This will help to move the toxins out of your body.   Lemon aids in digestion and detoxification.  And you can also add apple cider vinegar for alkalinity.  In addition because you are using distilled water, you can add a few grains of a good multi-mineral powder or few drops of a liquid ionic mineral to remineralize your water.

Daily eating plan for your kidney cleanse


Lemons for kidney cleanseEach day starts with a super kidney cleansing smoothie.  Examples of these would be watermelon smoothie, cranberry smoothie and a beet smoothie for your 3 days.

Here is the contents of the beet smoothie: 2 green apples, 1 medium beet, 1/2 cucumber, 1 inch ginger and 1/2 lemon.  In your smoothies or with a glass of water after your smoothie, you will be taking a herbal blend of kidney supporting herbs.



Enjoy a vegetable soup with a salad. Make sure you are incorporating beets into your soups, salads and smoothies every day.


Small piece of chicken or fish along with a plateful of vegetables that includes some of the following vegetables known to be good for kidney cleansing:

  • Spinach
  • Beets
  • Asparagus
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Garlic and onions
  • Kale

And add these herbs and spices to your meals:

  • Tumeric
  • Parsley
  • Ginger

You can also eat a bowl of fruit including organic apple and blueberries or watermelon.

Our main intention is to include foods that are natural diuretics and will aid in removing toxins from the kidneys.



Between meals you can drink tea make from any of the following:

  • Nettle tea
  • Dandelion tea
  • Ginger tea

Activities to participate in during your kidney cleanse

You want to relax and not have a full schedule during the 3 days of your cleanse.  Meditation, tai chi or mindfulness exercises are awesome activities to participate in during your cleanse. If you have access to an infra-red sauna, you should take one. Taking an Epsom salt bath  will help your kidney detoxification.  If you have an infra-red heating pad, putting it over your kidneys and relaxing will be beneficial. It is all about being peaceful and focusing on your health for 3 days.  Listen to relaxing music, read a book, take a relaxing stroll or just sit outside if the weather permits.  This is an opportunity to reset your body and your mind.

And in addition to the food plan above, you want to include some great herbal remedies into your 3 day cleanse.  The herbal remedies that I recommend include:
